‘Ottawa Collection,’ by Karim Rashid for BoConcept

image.png

Ottawa Collection arrives in Singapore – end of March.

Egyptian designer Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of this generation. Over 3000 designs in production, over 300 awards and working in 35 countries attest to Karim’s legend of design. His work is featured in 200 permanent collections and he exhibits art in galleries worldwide.

The Ottawa collection includes a complete dining room set with table, chairs, sideboard and cabinet. All pieces can of course be cutomised in choice of colours and materials as is the case with most BoConcept furniture.

The Ottawa dining chair is truly a unique piece of design. Inspired by nature with its leaf shape and a forest of legs, it brings character to any dining table while still being very comfortable. ‘When you do something very new, it is a challenge to make it comfortable. But in this day and age, there really is no excuse to make something uncomfortable. We know too much today to have this excuse,’ Karim explains. The chair can be customised with different combinations of colours and materials to create different looks – all with the same upholstered soft comfort.

The dining table has the same soft detailing to match the chairs. The profile and feeling of the table is very much reminiscent of the 50’s and 60’s of Danish furniture. It is functional, yet still soft. Minimal, but at the same time very sensual and human. This was important to Karim Rashid: ‘Of course you concentrate on the the matter of the object, but at the same time there should be a sense of humanity. Something soft that touches you and makes you feel at ease.’ The table is extendable and can easily be expanded by one person making room for 14 people. The mechanics, allowing the table to expand, are hidden. It just works, but doesn’t show. The table comes in a choice of light oak or high gloss white and two different leg colours.

The sideboard comes with great customisation options. Coloured inserts can be turned so you yourself can change the colour on the ends of the sideboard and behind the handles of the cabinet fronts. A fun detail with a great effect. Choose between white/green or oak/green. The handles that curve out become a fluid decoration to give the furniture some character while still being functional. They are obviously very easy to grab and pull open, and the lockers and drawers provide practical storage options.

The cabinet has nice exaggerated handles that makes it very easy to open – or you just push the cabinet to open it up. The handles and base come in a choice of oak or green to match your table or the sideboard.
‘With the Ottawa collection, I have taken a journey back to my roots 30 years ago when I graduated from design school in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. It’s a small Northern city with a beautiful climate and when I’m in Denmark, I always feel that there is a similar feeling and a similar climate. So when I started working with BoConcept, who is based in Denmark, I thought it would be nice to pay homage to my 30 years in design.’

Global individuality

Karim has put his fingerprint on the cup as an expression of global individuality, where we are all empowered to express our individuality.

Hand sketch of skyline

In his childhood, Karim spent many hours with his father hand sketching churches and buildings in London. Now, his home is New York where he has made this beautiful hand sketch of the Manhattan skyline.

Sketch from University

The abstract pattern of this cup is taken from sketches that Karim Rashid made at University in Ottawa 30 years ago.

Purple digipop

In the cup collection you will also find more playful and colourful designs representing the digital and personalised era we live in today. Karim Rashid has used one of his favourite colours, purple, to create a digipop pattern.

Pixilated pink

The pink cup has a cool graphic effect and is another abstract expression of the digital era, which is colourful, playful and very personalized.

Karim’s tattoos from 1995-2012

One cup is decorated with a pattern of Karim Rashid’s symbols that he has created over the last 20 years and turned into his own personal language. The symbols have in fact been tattooed on his body in different cities around the world as an expression of feelings and relationships with that place.
